The Hudson River winds its way south from the Adirondacks to the Atlantic through some of the most beautiful scenery in New York State. Railroads cross over it several times north of Albany but south of the city, the only remaining passage is the large CSX bridge near Selkirk, NY. Before 1974 the New Haven Railroad [later Penn Central RR] also moved its trains across the Hudson River on a bridge between Poughkeepsie and Highland NY. Through an unfortunate fire in 1974, the bridge was taken out of rail service and lay unused for several decades before nearby communities worked together to turn the bridge into New York State's newest state park called the Walkway Over The Hudson. There is no charge for entrance and both paid and plenty of free parking is available at both ends. Bridge opens daily at 7am and closes at sunset. The bridge is an interesting destination for today's train enthusiasts since it crosses over the very busy CSX Railroad River Line on the Highland [west] side of the river and over the Amtrak & Metro-North tracks on the east side. It essentially looks down on the major Poughkeepsie passenger train station. Good rooms, food, fuel and shopping are available on both sides of the Hudson. Rail photography is dramatic.
CSX uses frequencies 160.980 [primary] and 160.260 on the River Line
[west side]. For the east side, Amtrak uses 160.800 north of
Poughkeepsie while Metro-North controls the line south on 160.950.
Radio communication is generally very clear. All information on the bridge, including directions, can be found in their official link below. Official website: Walkway Over The Hudson www.walkway.org
