Remsen Depot
Remsen, New York
The New Remsen Depot
The original station at Remsen burned in the late 1890s. Its replacement was taken down in the mid-1960s. Remsen was the only station between Watertown and Utica where all three divisions of the New York Central converged and a turntable was operated. In its heyday, there were as many as 60 trains a day, running on 9 tracks, with at least 17 turnouts.
The new Remsen Depot, constructed on the foundation of the previous buildings, serves Adirondack Scenic Railroad Passengers and tour groups and hosts a variety of public and private events. The exterior is true to vintage photographs, but the interior was modified to include accessible facilities and a small kitchen. Historical and recent photos are on display, and the "Conductor’s Closet" Gift Shop features local and railroad souvenirs. Snacks and beverages are available, and tables under the canopy make it a convenient picnic spot. Combining a Remsen Depot tour with a short walk to the Stone Meetinghouse, home of the Remsen-Steuben Historical Society, provides visitors with an interesting overview of Remsen’s rich rural, Welsh history. Steuben Memorial State Historic Site is a few miles away.
Rebuilding the Remsen Depot
With enthusiastic public support, the Remsen Development Corporation was
formed in 1997 to rebuild the Remsen Depot. Early in 1998 work began removing
decades of brush and debris from the site, restoring the water tank, and
excavating the turntable pit. The canopy was constructed
in July in time for the community’s bicentennial celebration. At the opening
ceremony, a $30,000 grant from Oneida County was presented to the project. Funds
helped purchase 23 acres of adjacent land and building materials. Construction
began in October, and the new depot was framed in by December. Almost all of the
lumber used was trucked in and milled on site, and over 120 volunteers provided
"hands on" labor. Dozens of individuals, organizations and businesses
contributed discounted and donated supplies and services.
A donation from The Utica & Mohawk Valley Chapter, National Railway Historical Society and a $25,000 grant from The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties enabled volunteers to complete the roof and building exterior in 1999. A $20,000 Oneida County New Neighborhoods grant helped fund Remsen Depot drainage, parking lot, landscaping, exterior lighting and semaphore installation projects completed in June 2001. Work on the interior continued through March 2002, primarily completing and furnishing the replica telegraph office. Telegraph equipment donated by John Taibi, Munns Station, will be installed by mid-April. To date, over 400 people have contributed to the project.

Since March 2000, materials have been stockpiled to reinstall an 1800’ runaround track. The track will be completed by Fall 2004. Ash, milled at the time of construction, will be used to build replica canopy benches.
Volunteers are preparing school and group tour program content. Efforts to compile the "Remsen Railroad Honor Roll", with names, dates, jobs, photos and stories of people who worked on trains in or through Remsen, and other interpretive projects are underway. Several exhibits are being designed, and a model railroad layout, depicting the Remsen yard in the 1940s, is currently under construction.
RDC also plans to build a large pole-barn to serve as a temporary Remsen Railroad Heritage Museum, house 1900s farm equipment, and provide additional sheltered event space. Future goals include permanent facilities for the RR Museum and a New York State 1900s Dairy Farm Museum.
