Poughkeepsie Train Station

Amtrak Nationwide Service & Metro-North Commuter trains to NYC

The Poughkeepsie Train Station is a combination of historic and modern architecture that invites passengers to the city.  Amtrak provides passenger service to all major points in New York State and its nationwide system.  Metro-North Railroad provides commuter train service to and from New York City along the Hudson, including stops along the way.  The station is a portal to the City of Poughkeepsie, bringing passengers to the heart of town, only a few blocks from everything.  Bus and taxi service is readily available.  Lodging, good food and shopping nearby.  The immediate community surrounding the station is of special note since there are several restaurants with food and beverage service to welcome the weary traveler, only a few short steps away.

Rail photography in the area is intriguing, combining views of the old train sheds, stairs and tower with the modern high-platform rail station of today.  Amtrak and Metro-North provide multiple trains throughout the day.   Clearly visible to the north of the station is the Walkway Over The Hudson, New York State's newest state park.  The linear park was created across the old New Haven Railroad bridge linking New England railroads with New York State's railroads and beyond.  The century-old steel bridge unfortunately  decades of quiet, the communities of Poughkeepsie on the east side of the Hudson and Highland on the west created the mile-long Walkway.  The park is open from 7am to sunset daily, parking is readily available on both sides of the Hudson, as is convenient lodging, food and shopping.  Photography from the bridge itself allows tremendous opportunities as do many locations along both sides of the Hudson River.  In fact, there is a small city park located just two short blocks that allow photography of trains on the CSX River Line on the west side of the Hudson, as well as excellent views of river traffic [see tugboat photo above with train in background].

Amtrak's annual publication New York By Rail is published in Poughkeepsie by Martinelli Slocum Publishing and this all-color magazine contains material on rail travel throughout New York State.  Magazine is available on Amtrak's New York State trains and at train stations.  Visit their website to download a pdf copy to your home computer.
