Montana’s

Marias Pass
BNSF
Main Line through the Rockies
Tom Trencansky, Dryden, New York
Marias Pass is the lowest rail crossing of the Rockies. But don’t let that fool you into thinking this is not mountain railroading at it’s best. The BNSF line is the former Great Northern and the nearly mile-high elevation of the Summit is a challenge for even modern railroading.
Marias Pass is located in western Montana, approximately 70 miles east of Whitefish, MT. This is the BNSF mainline to the Pacific Coast, and, . . it is busy! The mainline flows through western Montana’s river valleys into the southern portion of Glacier National Park, skirting the park to the summit before heading directly east, off into the high plains of eastern Montana. There are few places in the world that can match this area for sheer natural beauty, and provide the constant number and variety of trains. This is perhaps one of the top railfan destinations in America.
