Adirondack
Railway Preservation Society (ARPS)
A major organization in the restoration of the Adirondack Scenic Railroad is ARPS which was founded to preserve rail opportunities in the area. Membership in the organization is highly recommended for individuals interested in continuous support of rail projects such as this. Membership information from ARPS, PO Box 84, Thendara, NY 13472. For additional information on levels of membership, contact them.
Adirondack Volunteers
The Adirondack Scenic Railroad has many opportunities for volunteers. The
line’s heavy schedule of excursions requires the need for everyone from
operating train personnel such as locomotive engineers, conductors and trainmen
to flagmen, car hosts, etc. Likewise, the Utica and Thendara stations need
additional personnel to man ticket sales, gift shop sales, answer phones, etc.
The railroad also uses volunteers on work parties to restore track and
equipment, clear brush, and more. For additional information on how you might be
able to volunteer your time to the railroad, contact them as noted below.
If you can not volunteer but wish to make a donation to this cause, the railroad has a "buy a tie" program in which they would honor the memory of someone you might like to donate in the name of. The program is supported by tax deductible donations of $50 or more, and the donor receives a Adirondack Scenic RR pin, Certificate, and year subscription to the ARPS newsletter. Contact them for additional information (see section on ARPS above, or log onto the Adirondack website).
